It is one of the surprising facts of music history: in 17th-century Italy, of all places, female composers found opportunities that later generations were scarcely to grant them. In the academies of Venice, at the courts of northern Italy, and in the convents of the major cities, vocal music of remarkable boldness emerged – sensual, expressive and formally independent. Barbara Strozzi published more works than any of her male colleagues in Venice. Francesca Campana and Antonia Bembo were hardly outdone by her in terms of inventiveness.

Les Kapsber’girls bring this music to life with the lightness and passion that were inherent in it from the very beginning: two voices, viola da gamba, baroque harp and theorbo – a soundscape of dazzling richness. The young French ensemble has dedicated itself to the rediscovery of these works with infectious enthusiasm, turning every concert into a true journey of discovery.
