Dmitriʼs Hamlet
Concert for Young People: Shostakovitch
Concert
Dmitri Shostakovich
»Hamlet« – Suite from the Incidental Music, op. 32a
Having discovered that his father was murdered, Prince Hamlet enters a maelstrom of anger and revenge. Dmitri Shostakovich’s »Hamlet« suite turns the story into gripping music in thirteen short pieces. However, Russian dictator Joseph Stalin disliked the material, so that it was banned from performance in 1932. Nowadays, the music enthrals young and old alike.
The Concerts for Young People invite an audience aged 10 years and older to an exciting and easily accessible encounter with the world of the orchestra. Symphonies, concertos and compositions are charmingly presented with an introduction to the works, an explanation of their backgrounds as well as vivid stories around the music.
