Metamorphoses
Alban Berg / Mino Marani
Chamber Symphony after the Piano Sonata, op. 1
Paul Hindemith
Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber
Johannes Brahms
Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, op. 83
Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata, op. 1 is considered a key work of the Second Viennese School. Philosopher Theodor W. Adorno recommended it as the ideal introduction to Berg’s music. It evolves with a new palette in Mino Marani’s orchestration.
Hindemith’s »Symphonic Metamorphosis« from 1943 is one of his most popular works. He transforms Weber’s themes with virtuosity and humour; the »Turandot Scherzo« with its far-Eastern elements and jazzy fugato is sublime.
When Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 premiered in 1881, it was a triumph – in contrast to his first. The solo voice acts as a driving force here, giving impulses and directing musical progress.
