Fantastique
Camille Saint-Saëns
»La muse et le poète«, op. 132
Hannah Kendall
»He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing« (2024)
Hector Berlioz
Symphonie fantastique, op. 14
British composer Hannah Kendall is the recipient of the Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis 2027. Her meditative, rhythmically poignant music combines clear structural precision with reflections on identity and history.
Saint-Saëns’s single movement concert piece for violin and cello (inspired by Alfred de Musset’s poem »La nuit de mai«) references a lyrical dialogue between muse and poet.
Berlioz’s »Symphonie fantastique« recounts the story of an artist who falls for a woman, embodied by an obsessive leitmotif: whirling waltz, opium inebriation, execution and burial with a witches’ sabbath and a grotesque »dies irae« parody.
