The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui
A ruthless gangster boss conquers Chicago and establishes his racket during the depression. In his parable »The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui«, Bertolt Brecht reveals the mechanisms of fascism, corruption and manipulation and at the same time demonstrates the lure of power. Ukrainian director Stas Zhyrkov, who has previously staged »King Lear – His Last Walk« in Heidelberg, draws the line to the present day. In these times of crisis, growing inequality and resurgent right-wing movements, this play’s grotesque comedy and unmasking humour hits the mark. It also shows that autocrats don’t attain power suddenly. Their rise is facilitated by the mainstream looking the other way, silence and cowardice. And that makes their rise resistible.
