The Misanthrope
Comedy by Molière
Theatre
Alceste lives by an ideal: uncompromising honesty. However, in a society that values flattery, self-portrayal and social rituals more than honesty, he is considered a failure and becomes an outsider. Of all people, this honesty-zealot falls in love with Célimène, who is a virtuoso at the game of chivalrous half-truths and takes up with several admirers at the same time.
Molière’s comedy unfolds its sharp humour from this juxtaposition, at the same time delivering a pointed social analysis. In his production, the multiple award-winning director Nuran David Calis asks how much conformism community demands of us and how much honesty it can survive.
