Romeo and Juliet
with texts by Mithu Sanyal
Verona is beset by the plague. A bitter civil war has divided the town. Amid that fear and aggravation, two young people meet and fall in love. They are the children of feuding families. Thus starts the probably best known love story in the history of world literature. It cries out against a world in which hatred has ensconced itself.
Bernadette Sonnenbichler opens her artistic directorate at Theater & Orchester Heidelberg with this story of radical, courageous love.
Shakespeare’s drama is enhanced by texts by writer Mithu Sanyal (»Identitti«, »Antichristie«) that connect the material with the present day. The production turns the spotlight on a society in exceptional circumstances – and on two young people who will not succumb to it.
