Luciano Berio
»Sinfonia« for Eight Singing Voices and Orchestra
Luciano Berio’s occupation with Gustav Mahler was particularly intense during the 1980s. He set five piano songs to orchestra, including texts taken from »Des Knaben Wunderhorn«. Making use of the range of the modern orchestra, his works are no mere transfers, but indeed tonal re-intepretations.
»Blumine« is a serenading part of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 that had originally been conceived as the second movement.
Berio’s »Sinfonia« is considered a key work of the twentieth century: the five movements for eight singing voices and orchestra skilfully interlace tradition and modernism like pop art collages.
