Agrippina
Winter in Schwetzingen
The twentieth edition of the Baroque festival Winter in Schwetzingen opens with Händel’s »Agrippina«. The opera was a hit in Venice in 1709 and catapulted the just 24-year-old composer into the spotlight. It centres on a woman who puts everyone in her shadow: Agrippina. She is clever, fun – and unscrupulous. She heaves her son Nero on the throne with lies, charm and reckoning. In the process, she cleverly deceives her husband, Emperor Claudius, as well as her lovers. Only her rival Poppea knows how to curb her.
Händel recounts this power game as a blend of fast-paced political thriller and romantic comedy. He draws his multi-faceted characters with impressive precision and endows his work with a musical flow like no other.
