Tosca

Opera by Giacomo Puccini
Opera & Musical Theatre

Giacomo Puccini’s »Tosca« is one of the most gripping operatic thrillers of them all. Around 1800, as tensions are escalating between republicans and royalists in Italy, singer Floria Tosca and her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, are caught in a deadly web of political intrigue and personal caprice. Scarpia is the brutal chief of police who abuses his power to deviously blackmail Tosca.

This dramatic story at the intersection of power and art uses the haunting fate of the artist couple to demonstrate what it is like to live in an authoritarian system. Puccini completes the picture with his music: a highlight of emotional power, intensity and tension.
